Wanna try your hand at being a Plant Mom? Try these 10 Easy to Care for Plants

I wasn't always a plant mom. I actually didn't have a single care to water and take care of plants. Didn't think I had the time and honestly saw them as something my Grandma has WAYYY to many of and not enough time to care for them (hence the many dead plants at her house).

When we moved into out first house (circa 2014), my Mom gifted me a Bird's of Paradise that at the time, I thought was just a cute plan. I didn't know the name but she told me "put it in a room with some light and water it once every 10 days". Not to disappoint my Mom, I did as I was told and was surprise that it grew, and not just grew but it flourished. When I asked how big it was going to get, she said "take some of the leaves and make another plant". We both had no clue what the term 'propagating' was but after successfully turning 1 plant into 3, I was officially hooked.

Fast forward 6 years, 2 houses, and 35+ plants later and I'm officially that person that could spend all weekend shopping for a new plant to add to the family.

Plants have become the new fad for the younger generation and while I appreciate the love for plants, it can be a little intimidating when you want to start a little plant family but have no clue where to start. My suggestion will always be to start off with low maintenance/low light plants. This gives you a chance to get comfortable with a watering schedule and determine if plants are really your thing or just something you want for your Instagram aesthetics. Not sure where to start? I got you covered. Here are some of my favorite beginner friendly plants:

Snake Plant

More light will help it grow, but it can tolerate darkness

Low Light

Pothos.jpg

Pothos

these plants have a tendency to climb/produce vines so adding a climbing stick in your planter pot will help this plant reach its full potential

Low/Medium Light

Silver Pothos

the beautiful silver markings make it stand out

Low/Medium Light

ZZ Plant

I love putting these plants in my bathrooms. Every couple of months, I switch out this for the snake plants and they are both thriving beautifully

Low/Medium Light

Birds-Nest.jpg

Bird's Nest Fern

It thrives in medium indirect light but can usually tolerate low indirect light.

Lucky Bamboo

One of the easiest plants to care for. I keep them in a little jar and water when dry. Little to no potting mix is required.

Low/Medium Light

Aloe Vera Plant

Tolerant for all types of light. Succulent family so ensure plant is completely dry before watering again

Monstera.jpg

Monstera

tolerates all types of lighting conditions and helps purify the air. The brighter the light the more brilliant the plant can get (the slits in the plant have a better chance of peaking thru in medium/high light)

Cast Iron Plant

this plant lives happily in dark rooms with only occasional watering. Plus, this rugged plant spreads slowly, so it rarely needs repotting.
